Our flock was established in 1963 when Jasper purchased six ewes for his son’s (John and Mark) 4-H projects. The ewes came from H.A. Ramsey of Plainfield, IN, who at one time owned the largest flock of registered Shropshires east of the Mississippi River. The sheep were sound in structure and high in quality and provided a great base for future development.
From that starting point the ewe flock grew to approximately 30 ewes throughout the 1970’s, ‘80’s and into the ‘90’s. Our first showing at the Indiana State Fair was in 1967. The first state fair champion came in 1974, as we exhibited the top 4-H ewe. This was followed by numerous champions and Premier Breeder Awards over the next several years.
From the beginning, top stud rams were carefully selected from the legendary Hartzell flock, as well as other breeders such as Dennison, Jorstad and Agrall that provided continual improvement in our genetic base. The results were highly productive sheep that possessed the style and size to win in the show ring.
Today, we have a very select flock (less than 20 ewes) that has continued to produce lambs with correctness, muscle and the ability to grow into large breeding sheep. We breed our ewes to the best genetics available through purchased/ leased rams and artificial insemination.
Grandson Matt continues the tradition of showing at state and national shows, just like we have been doing for the last forty-two years. Always learning and always striving to improve our flock and make a contribution to one of the great breeds in the sheep industry----Shropshires.
